Canadian Premier League
Over 9,700 days and 27 years since a domestic pro men’s
soccer league existed in Canada. The Canadian Premier League kicked off on Saturday,
April 27th, 2019, which should be the greatest moment in Canadian soccer
history.
First Half – Ryan Telfer the hero
for York 9 FC
It was clear for the first 9 minutes of the game; Forge FC
was anxious in CPL’s first ever game as York 9 FC came into the game blazing. York
9 FC had two golden chances early in the game, with the second one coming from
Rollocks for Forge FC could not gather the ball, which allowed Telfer to have
a break away and score into the bottom left corner.
However, after those 9 minutes, Forge FC absolutely
dominated most of the game. It was a battle between the amazing defense of York
9 FC versus the amazing offense of Forge FC. Ryan Welshman, who I thought was
the best player for Forge FC, almost scored through a bicycle kick for Forge FC.
Shortly afterwards Springo makes a desperate and incredible tackle and
preventing Forge FC’s Nanco for having a golden opportunity to level the
scoreboard in the 16th minute.
Forge FC keeps on attacking with Kyle Bekker missing the
target when he was in prime scoring position to hit the target, then Tristan
Borges shot was stopped by York 9 FC’s goalkeeper Nate Ingham, who ended up
being man of the match.
York 9 FC also had one more chance in the first half with Telfer again looking to score but his shot was blocked by a Forge FC defender.
Second Half – Thomas the Hero for
Forge FC
Forge FC for most of the second half came blazing, Nanco almost
scored from a Borges pass but narrowly missed the net. Then Tristan Borges hit
the crossbar being so close as he beat the goalkeeper but not the crossbar.
An important substitution made by Forge FC on the 56th
minute was when they substituted Nanco from the game and then brought in
Thomas, more on him later.
Two minutes later Manny Aparicio, first ever captain for
York 9 FC got the first yellow card not just in York 9 FC history but Canadian
Premier League history in the 56th tackle with a hard tackle on Tristan
Borges.
Nate Ingham of York 9 FC was sharp today as he stopped a
golden scoring chance from Borges, with a terrific pass from Emery Welshman to
keep it 0-1 lead for York 9 FC. Kyle Porter also almost scored for York 9 FC
from an unlikely scoring chance as the ball changed direction because of the
wind and hit the crossbar and beat the Forge FC goalkeeper.
The biggest controversy of this game happened in the 63rd
minute. Kyle Bekker hit Di Chikara in the head when the play was still dead. This
should have been a straight send-off for Forge FC’s first ever captain but he
gets away with it, which should have affected the game.
The only time York 9 FC’s defense looked shaky was in the 65th
minute but once again Forge FC was unable to capitalize.
Emery Welshman tried another shot in the 75th
minute, which was stopped by goalkeeper Nate Ingham. Then finally in the 80th
minute, Emery Welshman of Forge FC dribbled past a few York 9 FC defenders and
crossed the ball to Thomas inside the box, who makes no mistake. He kicks the
ball into the top left corner where even the man of the match Nate Ingham could
not catch up with and the game was level.
Forge FC did not stop there, they had several chances like a
chance for Zajec, but York 9 FC’s defense remained strong despite giving up a
late goal in the game.
Concern for York 9 FC for their next game though as Di Kiera
could not continue the game because of an injury and Manuel (Manny) Aparicio got
a second yellow card, giving him the first red card in Canadian Premier League
history, and will therefore not appear in the next game.
Nate Ingham got man of the match for York 9 FC as he made
incredible saves and was a big reason why York 9 FC stole 1 point from Tim
Hortons Field.

Forge FC got their first win at home with a 3-0 victory over
Pacific FC. Kyle Bekker for Forge FC was penalized with a 2-game suspension for
his unnecessary tackle against York 9 FC and thus allowing Tristan Borges to
become the captain for Forge FC. Meanwhile Cavalry FC is the only undefeated
team in the Canadian Premier with 2 wins at Spruce Meadows and sit first in the
Canadian Premier League.
Cavalry FC has a Perfect Record after wild 1-2 win over Forge FC
First Half – Forge FC
dominated possession, but Cavalry FC Strikes First
In the
first half Forge FC dominated the game. There was a pass from Welshman to
Novak, but Novak could not finish, and it remains 0-0. Forge FC dominated most
of the possession, but Cavalry FC would be the first team to strike first.
Akatube
made a clinical pass to Nik Ledgwerwood who was wide open, and the shot touched
the goalkeeper and ended up in the back of the net in the 21st
minute. Thomas must have felt like he could have prevented the goal as it was
shot quite close to him and was an easy goal to give up.
Forge
FC though keep pounding trying to find that equalizer, they almost scored
through a cross from Borges to Thomas. Then Forge FC finds their breakthrough
with a pass from Welshman to captain Tristan Borges who makes no mistake about
it. It passes Robert Carducci and it is 1-1 with 39 minutes already played.
Carducci
played well goalkeeping for Cavalry FC in the first half.
Cavalry
FC also had one good chance where there was miscommunication between goalkeeper
Roberts and Samuels for Forge FC, almost leading to a scoring chance for
Cavalry FC.
Second Half – Cavalry FC Pasquiotti hero against Forge FC
Forge FC started the game dominating possession, but Cavalry
FC’s defense was up to the task. Escalante had to be substituted for Pasquiotti
as he was carried on a stretcher. Pasquiotti is an important player as we talk
about what happened late in the game. Carducci stops a shot with a dive.
However, after the first 11 minutes of the game both teams
looked equal as they were both exchanging possessions.
Pasquito gives a good cross but Awyah did not read the pass
and the game stays 1-1.
Cavalry FC was forced to take a few yellow cards as Waterman
tried to hold down Welshman, which caused him to get a yellow card in the 81st
minute.
Forge FC gets a good chance with successive passes from Cice
to Welshman to Zajec but the touch was too heavy and the golden chance for
Forge FC to take the lead was gone.
Then just afterwards Malango makes a good pass to Roberts. Robert
Carmanga just had to put it in the back of the net, but passed the ball to
Roberts, the goalkeeper of Forge FC and it remains 1-1.
There were four minutes extra in Canada. At the end of the
four minutes Dewanga gives up a free kick to Cavalry FC, which proved costly.
The free kick is taken, Waterman keeps the possession alive, but it was
substitute Pasquioti to position the shot in the right corner past goalkeeper
Roberts to make it 1-2 Cavalry, which is how the game ends.
What is Next
Cavalry FC will play in the Canadian Championship in
Langford, British Columbia against Pacific FC on Wednesday then hosting FC
Edmonton in an Al Classico next week Saturday. Forge FC meanwhile will face
Valour FC at Investors Group Field in Winnipeg before travelling back to
Ontario where they will travel north the QEW to face York 9 FC at York Lions Stadium.

Second Half – Rain Delay May Have Impact on Game
Estevez kick was stopped by York 9 FC goalkeeper. After that
it was back and forth Gattas had a chance in the 48th minute.
There was unfortunately a rain delay in the second half, which might have changed the game entirely in favour of Forge FC.
York 9 FC would get the first shot after the delay and it
was stopped by Tristan Henry. Then Forge FC presses when Bekker passes it to
Nanco who scored the first goal of the game and Forge FC leads 0-1 over York 9
FC.
