Toronto, Ontario – The Most Multicultural City in the World

Learn about Canada’s Financial Capital and Ontario’s Provincial Capital City, Toronto

In today’s blog we will be talking about Toronto. Toronto is the provincial capital of Ontario and is the financial capital of Canada with all the biggest banks headquarters located in Toronto. Toronto is known for providing an array of different sports, cultures, and museums that are hard to find anywhere else. As Stephen Amell from BrainyQuote said: “A lot of people don’t know this, but Toronto is probably the most multicultural city in North America.”

Toronto has a large immigration population as 50% of Toronto are born outside of Canada (Marcelina, 2018).  This allows Toronto to have multicultural fanbases for sports teams like the Toronto Football Club (TFC) and Islamic civilization museums like the Aga Khan Museum and have diverse cuisines in Union Station, the centre of downtown Toronto.

Aga Khan Museum

The Aga Khan Museum is an Islam civilization museum in North York, this museum was created in large part the diverse population that exists in Canada. This museum is my personal favourite and talks about the history of Islamic civilizations like Spain, Iran, and India.

Another thing about this fantastic museum is it allows you to take pictures of artifacts and historical monuments at the Aga Khan Museum. It is fascinating to know about Islamic artifacts that existed in Spain, Iran, and the Indian subcontinent.

The Aga Khan Museum represents history, artifacts, culture not well-known to many Canadians living in Toronto. This culture of diversity can be experienced at Union Station, which has a diversity of cuisines.

Union Station

Union Station is the most popular and most congested area in Toronto. According to toronto union, there are approximately 300,000 visitors that pass-through Union Station every day.

Two reason for this are the trains and the five-bank headquarters being located in Toronto. For example, Go Trains come from all directions of the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) to Toronto including Pickering, Richmond Hill, Oshawa, and Hamilton.

This makes Toronto a huge gathering place for people living in the suburbs or just outside of Toronto to work or buy stuff at Union Station. Also, the five biggest banks headquarters in Canada are all situated in the centre of downtown Toronto. One of them is Royal Bank Plaza (Royal Bank of Canada headquarters). Royal Bank Plaza’s food court has ethnic cuisines like Szechuan Express, which is a Hakka cuisine, a fusion of both Indian and Chinese cuisines.

Szechuan Express is what I normally have at Royal Bank Plaza, and it tastes delicious. The shrimp at this place is perfect and I recommend anyone to try it.

Meanwhile, at Brookfield Place I had the delicious Thai islands food, which serves delicious green curry with rice or noodles. The green curry chicken tastes fantastic as the curry and chicken packed a lot of flavour in one’s mouth, giving people a satisfied meal. This multiculturalism does not stop with food though, in sports TFC have shown inclusion to Syrian refugees and made them fans of TFC.

TFC

TFC is the oldest first division professional soccer team in Canada. They came into Major League Soccer in 2007. TFC are known for the diversity of fans in Canada, including helping Syrian refugees settle in Canada.

According to the Toronto FC website, they were 1,500 Syrian refugees who came to BMO Field to watch the TFC game. The refugees also was went to TFC’s training camp and got to talk to TFC players. This was a way for TFC to give these Syrians a chance to enjoy themselves after going through a tough time escaping from Syria. It really was a generous act by TFC that showed how welcoming Toronto is to other ethnic groups.

Overview of Toronto

Toronto is a multicultural city that has a lot to offer to the rest of the world. With a diverse population, it was the main reason why North York got the Aga Khan Museum, which is quite close to Toronto.

Furthermore, the food court of Union Station has a diversity of shops like Hakka and Thai cuisines available at Royal Bank Plaza and Brookfield Place. Also, TFC showed inclusion by giving them free tickets at BMO Field to watch and cheer TFC on, which shows inclusion without discrimination in Toronto and is why Toronto is considered the most multicultural city in the world.
